Another great read about SGM Cañete’s life and insight into Filipino martial arts and culture is a book authored by Meadows, Tom (2014), “The Challenge Fights of Grandmaster Ciriaco “Cacoy” Cañete: The greatest living Eskrimador”. This book was the result of many interviews with SGM Cañete.
SGM Cañete never turned down a challenge match. These matches were also known as death matches. Where the possibility of death or serious injury were accepted. Opponents exchanged waivers accepting the possible outcomes and agreeing not to seek revenge. He accepted every match put to him and was the victor of more than 100 of these challenge matches.
He held blackbelts in Cacoy Doce Pares (12th degree), Eskrido (12th degree), Pangamont (10th degree), Judo (8th degree), Ju Jitsu (8th degree), Aikido (6th degree) and Karate (6th degree).
Judo, karate, aikido and ju jitsu were incorporated into his stick, sword and knife fighting to produce what he called “Eskrido”. The way of Eskrima.
